Dragon Slayer Walkthrough

Free to Play Runescape Quest

Back to the Runescape Guide Index

What you need: 32 Quest Points (member of the Champion's Guild), the capability to kill a level 83 dragon, 3 planks, 90 steel nails, one each of an unfired bowl, an anti-dragon shield, silk, a lobster pot, a wizard's mind bomb and either 12k or 2k gold (the lesser if you're at level 31 magic+)
The Quest Reward: The ability to wear rune plate body armor and dragon leather bodies, 18,650 experience each in strength and defense and 2 Quest Points (also a requirement for the Heroes' Quest)

I recommend you gather all the items you're going to need to complete the quest before you begin it. If you're only level 31 in magic you will need a wizard's mind bomb later to snag an item with telekinetic grab. Since your skill level might go down right after you drink it, you should probably grab two of them. You will need one for sure to complete the quest as it's a required item. So buy 3 if you're 31 or 1 if you're 33. Wizard's mind bombs can be purchased in Falador at the bar.

Silk can be purchased at either the silk trader in East Ardougne or at the Varrock clothing store. Hammers can be found at most any general store in Runescape. The lobster pot you need can be purchased at the Port Sarim fishing store for a low price. Steel nails can be either smithed (if you're level 34+) or purchased from other players. The unfired bowl can be crafted if you're at least level 8 in the skill. You could also buy this from another player but I'd recommend just making it yourself. Finally, you'll need to gather three planks.

The planks can be a dangerous part because you have to venture into level 19 wilderness to get them. I highly recommend you go naked so you don't lose anything if you die while out there. You'll need to head north of Varrock until you find the Chaos Temple (consult your world map). The planks are found just northwest of there, in the graveyard of shadows, on the ground.

Now that you've got everything you need you can proceed to start the Dragon Slayer quest at the Champion's Guild, which is southwest of Varrock. Talk to the guild master there and ask him how you can get your hands on a rune plate body. He'll inform you of his old buddy Oziach and tell you to speak to him about it. You can find him in a house west of Edgeville.

Ask Oziach if you can buy a rune plate body, then that the guild master sent you. He tells you that you're unworthy but you can prove yourself by slaying a dragon. To do this you'll need an anti-dragon shield - ask him about it. Inquire as to the location of the dragon and you'll be informed that the map with the location of Elvarg's lair has been broken into pieces. When you're done chatting, he'll give you a maze key. Now it's time to nap an Anti-dragon shield.

Head to the upstairs of Lumbridge castle and talk to Duke Horacio. Ask him about a shield to protect you from dragons' breath and he'll give you the shield you need. The Anti-dragon shield greatly reduces the damage received from a dragon's breath attack. You'll use this a lot later when you're training on dragons and collecting the seriously awesome loot they drop.

For now, you need to get the first map piece. I recommend you start with the one located in Port Sarim. Bring runes to cast a telekinetic grab spell as well as two wizard's mind bombs if you need them to cast it. You'll also need either magic runes to attack your target or ranged weaponry, as he is in a cell. Head into the Port Sarim jail (south of the city) with the items I recommended and search for Wormbrain the goblin. If you're not level 31 magic you can buy the map piece from him for 10k but hopefully you can just kill him and cast the grab spell on the map piece. Two more to go.

Now, head to the Falador bank and take the maze key you got from Oziach, some food, and your normal combat gear. Proceed to Melzar's Maze, which is southwest of Falador.

The entrance to the maze is on the eastern side of the building. Use your maze key on the door there to gain entry. Once inside, kill giant rats until you find a red key. Head to the northwestern door and use the key which will cause it to disintegrate. Proceed up the ladder in that room, then proceed to kill ghosts until you find an orange key. Once it's been found, look to the north, then count two doors down from the eastern wall. That's the room you want. Climb up the ladder and you'll be in a room with skeletons.

Once again, kill them until you get a key. This time it will be yellow. Use the yellow key on the southwestern door and follow the path until you come to another ladder. Climb down it, then the next two and you'll be in the basement.

Now you'll have to kill zombies to get a blue key (*yawn*). You'll have to stay in this room because the exit door will take you back to the beginning, unfortunately. Stand firm and wait for the zombies to reload until you find the key. Use the key once found on the blue door to the northwest.

You're almost there! Now kill Melzar the mad to get a magenta key and use it on the magenta door (obviously) to fight a level 82 lesser demon. I hope you didn't ignore my recommendation that you bring food! When you finally kill him, he drops a green key. Use it on the green door to the north to find a treasure chest. Inside is the second map piece (you have to search it). Climb up the eastern ladder to get out of this dismal place. One more map piece to go!

The final map piece can be found at Ice Mountain. Before you head out, return to Falador and grab your wizard's mind bomb, unfired bowl, lobster pot and silk. Ice Mountain is north of Falador, west of the monastery. Consult your world map if you need to. You'll need to climb to the top of the mountain, which isn't very hard. Again, look at your map to see the way you should go. You should find an NPC called the Oracle on the northern side of the mountain. Tell him you seek a map piece and he'll give you a hint. You should have all four items he mentioned in your inventory. Head south of the mountain to find the entrance to the dwarven mines (it's a ladder on the eastern side of the dwarf outpost). Once inside, head a little south then to the east to find a door. With the items in your inventory all you need to do is click it to open. Inside you'll find a chest containing the final map piece. Head south once you exit that room until you spot a staircase (stick to the eastern wall). Upon climbing it, you'll find yourself once more in Falador.

Return to the Falador bank and grab your hammer, anti-dragon shield, 90 steel nails and 3 planks as well as 2k gold. You'll also want to bring food and your best combat gear. While you're there, you'll also want to assemble the map. Use each piece with another to put it all together. You'll need to bring this with you, as well.

Go back to Port Sarim and find Klarense, who is on the dock east of the grocery store. Offer to buy the Lady Lumbridge and you'll finally have the transportation you need to get to Crandor Isle. Unfortunately, you need the repair the boat to make it seaworthy, but that's what the planks and nails are for.

Board the ship, which is behind Klarense, by crossing the gankplank. Climb down the ladder then search for the hole in the ship. Use each of your three planks on the hole and it will be patched. You've fixed the ship, now you just need a captain.

Head to Draynor Village and go to the bank to stock up on food and grab 30 coins for future travel off the island, then seek out Ned, who is in a house northeast of the bank. Ask him to take you to the island and he'll agree to meet you at the ship. Head back to the Lady Lumbridge and go back below the deck. Talk to Ned and tell him you're ready to go!

You'll finally be on Crandor Isle. Consult your world map to see the exclamation point in the center of the isle. That's your destination. You'll have to follow a bit of a path to get there. I suggest you ignore any enemies you encounter and press toward your goal, but save your running energy for you'll need it later.

Once you reach the center of the island, climb down the rock opening and you'll be in the dungeon. Follow the path all the way to the southeast until you get to a gate, behind which is Elvarg. Head inside and take him down. Use your prayer if you need to, and if your weapon has a crushing or stabbing attack it will be more effective than slashing him. Still, the battle isn't impossible if you brought plenty of food. Just make damn sure you're wearing your Anti-dragon shield.

When Elvarg is dead, you've completed the quest. To get off the island, head south of where Elvarg was until you come to what appears to be a dead end. Push the wall to enter Karamja Volcano. Head further south until you can go east, then head east until you come to a cave entrance. Don't take it! Look carefully and you'll spot a rope hanging from the ceiling. Climb it out and you'll find yourself in a safe place. Head all the way east and use the 30 coins I recommended to hitch a ride with the customs officer, back to Port Sarim. Now you can return to Oziach and tell him you've slain the dragon to buy a rune plate body for 65k.
