What you need: The Capability to kill a level 39 enemy.
The Quest Reward: 6 Quest Points and Excalibur

To begin the Merlin's Crystal quest you need to head to Camelot, which is west of Catherby. Talk to King Arthur there, who is found on the first floor. Tell him you'd like to join the knights of the round table and he'll tell you that you must complete a quest first. Your quest will be to free Merlin from the crystal in which he is imprisoned.

Head downstairs and outside the main castle door to find Sir Gawain. Ask him how to get Merlin out of the crystal and he'll tell you it was probably the works of the evil Morgan La Faye. Ask him how to get inside and he won't know. You need more information.

You should now head upstairs into the room to the northeast. Talk to Sir Lancelot and ask him how to get into Morgan La Faye's stronghold. He'll tell you that there are only two ways in: by land (over a drawbridge) and by sea, as they take all deliveries by boat. The land option is out, so you'll have to go by sea.

Head southeast of Camelot and go to Catherby. By the docks you will find the general store owner, Arhein. Ask him, "Is that your ship?" and he'll tell you that indeed, it is. Ask him where he delivers, then ask if you can hitch a ride. He'll reveal that he's waiting on a shipment of candles. Before you do this next step you may want to get some food if you are low level. You could fish in Catherby or possibly withdraw from your bank. Now, back to business: there happens to be a candle shop to the northwest, behind which is a crate where you can hide.

Wait patiently inside the crate, clicking next over and over. If you don't climb out, eventually the dialog will indicate that you are being shipped with the crate to Keep La Faye. Upon arrival, exit the crate when prompted. Head inside and go up the stairs. Once you've ascended the first flight, head south and go up those. You'll be on the top floor, with Mordred to the north of you. Kill him and Morgan will ask you to stop. Tell her that if she reveals how to free Merlin you will. Ask her about the location of Excalibur and the magical words that will bind the demon.

Head out the castle through the door to the west on the first floor and kill a bat. If you would feel more comfortable, you could grab a couple more to make sure you don't accidentally bury them. You'll need a loaf of bread later, and a good place to buy one (if you can't bake one yourself) is in East Ardougne. Now head northeast, back to Catherby.

Once there, buy a bucket at the general store. Once you've got the bucket, go to the building north of the bank to find some insect repellant. Take both of these items and head directly west of Catherby to reach some beehives. Use the insect repellant on the beehive then select 'take wax from bee hive'. You'll now have some wax, which you can take to the candle shop in Catherby.

Talk to the candle maker and ask him if he has any black candles. He'll tell you that it's bad luck to make black candles but he'll do it if you get him a bucket full of wax (which you already have). Talk to him again and he'll give you the black candle. Now head back to the general store and buy a tinderbox. You won't need the black candle or tinderbox for a while, but it's best to keep them with you.

Head to Taverly and go to the lake to the southeast. You should find the Lady of the Lake on an inlaid section of land. Talk to her and tell her that you seek excalibur. She'll tell you that you must be tested before you're given such a powerful artifact. She'll instruct you to head to Port Sarim and go to the second floor of the jewelry shop there. Do so.

You'll encounter a beggar who will ask for a loaf of bread, which you should have in your inventory. Grant his request and he'll turn into the Lady of the Lake, who will give you Excalibur.

Now that you've got all the items you need, all you require are the magic words. In order to get these, head to Varrock. There is a temple in the southeastern part of the city with a chaos altar. Once there, select 'check chaos altar' to discover the magical incantation, which is 'Snarthon Candtrick Termanto'. Now head back to Camelot with your newfound knowledge.

Once in Camelot, head to the northeastern corner of the castle (not inside the castle proper). There, you'll find a fountain with a circle on the ground nearby to the east. Light the black candle with your tinderbox, then drop the bat bones in the circle. A spirit will appear, upon whose arrival you will need to say the magical words (again, 'Snarthon Candtrick Termanto'). Upon saying the incantation, the spirit will obey your command. Your character will wish Merlin free, and the spirit will leave.

Now head inside Camelot castle, then go up the ladder in the southeastern corner. Proceed up the ladder, then the next you find. You'll reach Merlin, who is trapped in the crystal. You may or may not need to be wielding excalibur, but either way you can click the crystal to smash it, freeing Merlin. He tells you to speak to King Arthur to be rewarded. Do so and your quest is finished.
