Command and Conquer 3 Walkthrough - GDI Mission 1, North Carolina Badlands

Return to the Command and Conquer 3 Guide Index

The first mission of Command and Conquer 3 is a simple one, as can be expected from any RTS. Your mission objectives are simple, providing you with an opportunity to get a feel for the game. I honestly doubt many people will need help with these objectives. Indeed, the entire mission can be summed up with a simple step-by-step procedure.

1. Send your infantry east, into the base, killing the nod forces. It's a good opportunity to get used to the attack-move order. Drag a box around your infantry squads, selecting them, then press 'A' on the keyboard. Then, click the right mouse button to indicate the area your troops should move toward. The infantry will proceed to the targeted location and stop to fight enemy forces along the way. If you do this inside the base, your soldiers will kill everything that stands in their way.

2. Wait on the MCV. The Mobile Construction Vehicle will come in from the west and lumber its way to your new base, where it will unpack.

3. Build a barracks, and 3 infantry. Remember that you can select a rally point for your troops by right clicking on a spot of ground with the barracks selected (the structure, not the tab). The game gives you a good tip that shouldn't be overlooked, as well. Multiple production buildings allow multiple queues, making the formation of an army much faster. I recommend it in this case, since barracks are cheap and it will likely give you a faster completion time.

4. Build a power plant, after it's destroyed by suicide bombers. The game says production is "much slower" when you have low power. In fact, it's double the build time. A simple power plant goes from 6 seconds to 12 seconds in multiplayer. There is a hotkey to turn off power to a structure, "X', which can be used to turn off certain strucures during an attack or to speed up production temporarily. Try to keep yourself a bit of excess power in later missions. It's sad to see a Sonic Emitter go offline because some chump NOD tapped your power plant.

5. Repair the command post. Learn to use the "C" hotkey to perform your repairs. It's much easier.

6. Watch the map expand. This game will do that to you pretty often, but it's a nice touch.

7. Build a watchtower. I consider this to be essential base defense. It's sickly embarrasing to lose an important structure to a single, lone engineer. I mean, you want to be taken seriously, don't you? In this case, you can plop the watch tower on the eastern side of you base.

8. Destroy NOD's outpost. Send your riflemen to the east with the attack-move order. They'll take down the NOD while you requisition some missile squads. You probably have a lot of cash so you can build a small army without worrying. I mean this is the first mission. Save a building for capture with one of your engineers.

9. Repair the bridge. Pick an engineer and click a bridge! The other free engineer should be used to take any of the nod structures at the outpost.

10. Capture the tiberium spike. Send your engineer alone to capture the spike, while you build up your army. The extra income you get from the spike will likely be welcome.

11. Play around with some orcas. Building an airfield will bring in Orca bomber reinforcements. Fill in the ranks by building an additional 2 orcas, then send them after the key nod structures. After a time, you'll be allowed to use the ion cannon. Point it at the center of their base, where it will hit all the key structures, and let 'er rip!
