Mission 3: Operation Hail to the Chief

Mission Objectives:
  • Destroy the Psychic Beacon

Tanya's not here, woe is me. Oh well, we have a new toy again - the IFV. You can put almost any infantry in this and it will enhance their powers. Engineers can repair other units, GIs are not so powerful IMHO it takes too long just to destroy a Soviet infantry unit. Later you can put more interesting units inside, for now stick an engineer in one and use it to keep your vehicles repaired (saving one grizzly tank from destruction saves you $700!). This map is, yep, Washington, D.C., you can repair monuments here (like the jefferson memorial you start next to) and get rewarded cash and unit upgrades, sweet. It's worth it to do this, the cash rewards are great. Use some unit you want to be upgraded to pick up the loot though, it's wasteful to upgrade an attack dog's firepower or give it veterancy.

With but one objective here it seems very easy. The Soviets have a strong hold on D.C. and you've got to move carefully to eliminate their occupancy. With the psychic beacon in place, the citizens here will frequently attack your base. Put some GIs in the two buildings near the bridges and they will take care of them as they come. Use engineers to repair these buildings so they don't crumble as soon as tanks fire on them. Build your base quickly so you can produce an attack force asap. There is a hospital to the southeast you can capture with an engineer. This will enable your infantry to auto-heal (which is pretty useful). This really isn't very hard, take a nice mixture of troops (multiple tanks and GIs) to the base across the topmost bridge. I found this base easy to destroy, but I left most of it intact and captured it with my engineers. The war factory is pretty useful as rhino tanks are more powerful than their grizzly counterparts. Build some pillboxes near the bridge here to deal with mind controlled citizens. Roll steadily onward, replenishing your multirole force as needed. I had very little trouble here and made it to the psychic beacon (northeast corner of the map) after losing a total of about 12 tanks. Destroy the sentry guns near the beacon first, then the beacon itself.
