Shield of Arrav Walkthrough
What you need: A little gold, 20 coins tops.
The Quest Rewards: 1 Quest Point, 600 coins (also a requirement for the Heroes' Quest).
There are two gang options to choose from. You'll be required to work as a team (although not for long) to complete the quest. There is no real benefit to being on one particular side, but fighters might generally prefer to be in the black arm gang while ranged (bows) would be better for phoenix.
Finding a Partner for Shield of Arrav
Here's a step by step process to finding a partner:1. Head to Runescape.com (this opens in a new window).
2. Click Community, then Forums
3. Login
4. Click the Quests forum under "Game - Runescape related discussion"
5. Click the sticky post for the "find a shield of arrav partner".
6. Click Last. You will see the most recent people asking for help. Look for those of the opposite gang that you chose. They'll usually say what stage they're on.
7. Add one of these people to your friends and try to send them a message, asking if they're still working on it. If you can't find anyone, make a post of your own, being specific about your progress and what gang you are with. You may even want to include what world you're in. To find that out click friends in the game. The world number will be listed at the top.
Black Arm Gang
First, find Charlie the Tramp near the south gate of Varrock city. Give him a couple coins, then talk to him about what's down the alley. He'll tell you it's the black arm gang hideout. Head west and go into the building with a woman named Katrine. Ask her if you can work for the black arm gang. She'll require 2 phoenix gang crossbows to allow you to join. This is where finding a partner comes in. If you don't already have one, see above. Running about looking for someone doesn't work out very well, but persistence may pay off. Just don't be a spammer about it.You can get the key from your phoenix gang partner and go into their base (which is in the southeastern side of varrock, look for an exclaimation point). Alternatively, your phoenix gang member friend can just kill the guard inside and give you the crossbows. This worked just fine for me. How ever you get them, take the crossbows back to Katrine and she'll make you a member. Head inside the door behind her and climb upstairs. Look for a cupboard, open it and search it to find a half of the shield of arrav.
Take your half of the Shield of Arrav to King Roald, who's usually in the northeastern part of the Varrock castle. He needs you to head to the museum (east of the word Varrock on the map). Take the shield half to the curator of the museum and ask him for two certificates. Now you just need to trade with your partner once they have their certificates. Give 1 of yours away for one of theirs, then use the 2 pieces to combine them into a completed certificate and take it back to the King!
Phoenix Gang
Head to Varrock Castle and into its library. Speak to Reldo and ask him for a quest. He'll tell you to search for a book, so go about searching all the bookcases until it's found. Read it, then speak to him again, and ask about the Phoenix Gang. He says to ask Baraek the fur trader about them. He's just south of the castle, in the main square and not hard to spot. He should be in the northeastern corner of the square. Ask him about the Phoenix Gang and cough up 20 coins for information on the location of their hideout.
Head to the phoenix gang hideout in the southeastern corner of Varrock (there is an exclaimation point). Use the ladder that leads down in this area to enter the base. Talk to Straven and ask to join. He'll tell you a lie, but you should out him by telling him you know who he is. He'll ask you to kill Johnny the Beard (level 2) in the blue moon inn, which is a bar to the west-northwest. Kill Johnny and take the report he drops back to Straven. You'll become a member, and can find your half of the shield in a chest in the hideout. The key you get can be used to give to your partner to get the crossbows for the black arm gang part, or you can do it yourself and trade them the crossbows. The crossbow carrying guard is located in the upstairs room ( a separate house outside that has a ladder that leads up).
Take your shield half to the king just as your black arm counterpart will do, and then proceed to the museum curator (east of the word varrock on the map) to get a pair of certificates. Swap one certificate with your ally and you'll be able to combine the two and complete the quest by speaking to the King of Varrock once more.
