The Grand Tree Walkthrough
What you need: 25 agility, and you must be able to kill a level 172 Black Demon (you can use prayer potions and super attack/strength etc. to increase your effective level. I did this at level 78). Transportation also helps, especially the Varrock teleport spell and Spirit Tree teleportation from Tree Gnome Village.
The Quest Rewards: 5 Quest points, 7900 Agility experience, 18,400 Attack experience, 2,150 magic experience, access to the mine under The Grand Tree and access to gnome glider transportation, which is very useful!
As I said, transportation will probably slow you down the most when you're taking on the grand tree quest. Have either a ring of dueling (castle wars), ardougne teleport, watchtower teleport, or energy potions. Varrock teleport is great for getting to the grand tree because you can head to the grand exchange and use the spirit tree in the northeastern corner to get there. With all that in mind, head to the grand tree however you can. Speak to the king inside the tree and he'll give you a translation book and bark sample. He'll tell you of a man named Hazelmere, who can be found east of Yanille on an island (connected by bridges). Use your fastest mode of travel to get there. I had to teleport to Ardougne.
When you get to Hazelmere's place, talk to him and all you'll hear is blah, blah. He'll write a note for you to translate with your book. To save you the trouble it reads the following:
A man came to me with the King's seal
I gave the man Daconia rocks
and Daconia rocks will kill trees!
Go back to King Shareen at Grand Tree and tell him this exact message (you may need to select none of these to scroll a couple times to find the right message). Head just outside the grand tree ramp, and you'll find Glough's house directly to the east at the bottom of it. Talk to him and he'll tell you taht he'll take care of everything. Return to the king once more to discover that Glough has taken a prisoner. Head to the top of the tree (right-click and climb up ladder helps speed things up). Speak to Charlie and he'll tell you he thinks Glough is up to something and you should go to his house. Head there, and grab the journal from the cupboard. You can read it if you want, but basically Glough has a very strong hatred for humans and intends to kill them all.
Talk to Glough about his journal, and he'll call for the guards and have you arrested. You'll find yourself locked up right along with Charlie. Talk to Charlie to get a password to a shipyard (Ka-Lu-Min) where Glough is believed to be building an armada. The king will come to set you free, and tell you to take a glider to Karamja. Do just that, by talking to the pilot. The glider will crash on Karamja isle and you'll find the shipyard is very close to the east. Head a little south toward the gate and speak to the guard. Tell him Glough sent you and he'll ask for the password, which was Ka-Lu-Min.
Head inside and find the foreman. I found him all the way on the end of the southern of the two docks. He could be anywhere, just make sure you don't accidentally attack him when you do find him, instead right click and choose talk-to. He'll ask you some 'casual' questions to see if you know Glough. The answers are:
She is no longer with us
he likes worm holes
Anita
He'll give you the lumber orders to build the boats. Return to The Grand Tree once more. I used Varrock/spirit tree. If you didn't do the Tree Gnome Village quest you'll have to ask Femi outside the Tree Gnome Stronghold to sneak you in. Depending if you've helped her this could cost you 1000 coins. Head back and speak to the King and tell him about the orders. He won't believe you. Climb back to the top of the tree and talk to Charlie. He'll tell you that he heard that Glough left his key at his girlfriend, Anita's house. Head there. She lives just 2 houses west of the swamps outside the grand tree. Look on your map.
Anita is really, really dumb and hands over Glough's treasure chest key. Return to his house and use it on his chest to discover invasion plans. Still the dumb king doesn't believe you. He does give you four stick formations that spell TUZO, or open when translated. Make absolutely sure you're ready to fight the level 172 black demon before you press on. I used sharks (had them, didn't need them because of prayer/nice armor/defense potions).
Go back to Glough's house and climb the tree in the northeast corner. It leads to another platform. Orient your camera north and spell TUZO by using the sticks on the pedestals from left to right. You'll hear a grinding noise and be able to use the trap door on the platform. It leads under the great tree itself. Watch for Glough to arrive, and talk to him a bit to see just how crazy he is, and he'll call his "little friend" the black demon to attack you. Try to kill him as quickly as possible as I've heard that it can reset. Still, you can try again if you fail to kill him in time but it's a waste of resources. Ranged fighters and spear users can hide behind the rocks to avoid taking damage. Me, a big melee with some dragon armor had no trouble standing toe to toe with him with all my best prayers on, completely buffed up by a super attack, defense and strength potion. It was a cinch.
When it's over, Glough will run away. You're under the tree where the king took you before. Follow the path west until you reach the large chamber. The king should be in the northeastern area. Speak to him and he'll be grateful but ask you to find the last piece of Daconia. I found my piece very near the king in one of the roots. It could be random. At any rate, keep up the search because once you find it you've completed this very rewarding quest. The five quest points are great, and the ability to use the gnome gliders is even better!
