Runescape Slayer Skill

Back to the Runescape Guide Index

Slayer is a members-only skill in Runescape. With it, you'll be more capable of killing special monsters which drop better-than-average loot when they die. In order to increase your slayer level you'll need to take up missions from one of the various slayer masters in the game. You may get a quest to kill 25 monkeys, for example. Each kill nets you a certain amount of slayer experience, based upon difficulty.

Aside from the loot, a good reason to focus on slayer is to increase your combat and prayer levels. Killing many monsters repetitively can be somewhat boring, but you'll feel good knowing you're increasing your ability to fight while you're doing so.

There are five Slayer masters in Runescape. Here they are listed by difficulty along with their locations:

  • Turael is located in Burthorpe and offers the easiest missions of the bunch.
  • Mazchna, located in Canifis offers missions a little harder than Turael.
  • Vannaka is in the Edgeville Dungeon, just before it turns into wilderness. This is a medium-difficulty Slayer Master.
  • Chaeldar, from the Lost City is the second-most difficult Slayer Master, requiring a combat level of at least 70.
  • Duradel from Shilo Village offers the most difficult missions and requires a combat level of 100 or more.

    Monsters

When you receive a mission in runescape it could be to kill any of these monsters. The location of each monster, as well as some useful information about them is listed here:

    Bear
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 19
    Slayer XP: 25
    HP: 37
Bears are pretty standard creatures. You can find them in the forest North of Falador. There are many to be found there, and this quest should go pretty quickly because of that. If you bring an axe and your tinderbox, they drop meat when they die, which can be cooked on an open fire to help your healing. Don't rely totally on this, of course, as their meat doesn't heal many hp. It will simply help you avoid depleting your supplies as rapidly.

    Cockatrice
    Slayer level required: 25
    Level: 37
    Slayer XP: 37
    HP: 37
Cockatrice are found in the Fremennik slayer's dungeon. This members-only area is located east of the golden apple tree, which itself is east of Relekka. Bring along a mirror shield, purchasable from any slayer master for 5000 coins. They cannot be defeated by anyone without this shield as they will gradually drain your skills and eventually start really dishing damage. They drop limpwurt root very often, as well as a variety of runes and gems.

    Dogs (Guard Dog)
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 44
    Slayer XP: 49
    HP: 49
A good place to fight these is located in Mcgrubor's Wood, which is just west of the Seer's Village. In order to get in, you can squeeze through the fence at the northern side of the area. Note that these are aggressive, but are not in a multicombat area so no more than one can attack you at a time. The bank in Seer's Village will be helpful to you, as it is not too far away. Keep an eye on your hp and go back for more food when you need it. There is an altar in that town too, so you could use your combat prayers to aid you.

    Flesh Crawler
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 28
    Slayer XP: 25
    HP: 25
Flesh crawlers can be found on the 2nd level of the stronghold of security. The stronghold is located in the center of barbarian village. Climb down the hole near the central mining area. Head directly south once you reach the stronghold's second level. There is a good spot for rangers to attack them midway down the map here, but if you proceed all the way to the southeastern corner there are many more to be killed for melee players. They drop one part of the skull sceptre (bottom) as well as a large variety of herbs. If you're interested in forming the skull sceptre, the other pieces are found on Ankous (4th level), Catablepons (3rd level), and Minotaurs (1st level). Before you bother, note that the skull sceptre is non-tradeable and its only real use is that it has five charges to teleport you back to barbarian village.

    Ghoul
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 42
    Slayer XP: 50
    HP: 50
These are near the Mort Myre Swamp entrance, west of Canifis (look northwest of the bridge). They're aggressive, but not particularly hard opponents if you're of a sufficient combat level (say, 60). They're known to flee when they get low on HP so running while fighting them can be beneficial. Unfortunately, they don't drop anything but bones so don't expect to find any good loot. They do, however, give decent slayer XP so you won't feel like they're completely worthless kills. If you get this quest from Mazchna, you're in for a treat because they're not very far from him.

    Green Dragon
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 79
    Slayer XP: 75
    HP: 75
Green dragons are found in several locations in the wilderness. I prefer the area east of clan wars. Any journey into the wilderness is dangerous. While there aren't player killers here with new updates, there are now revenants. They're extremely strong ghosts that use magic and will hunt you mercilessly. Killing one that is even close to your level will likely be a challenge and take a good deal of food because they can heal themselves. I tend to bring leather gear with me on these expeditions just in case I get attacked. The higher magic defense helps to protect you and give you time to get away. The Green Dragons themselves will require the use of an anti-dragon shield to fight effectively, otherwise prepare to get roasted. They drop dragon bones and green dragonhides and are the weakest of the mature dragons.

    Harpie Bug Swarm
    Slayer level required: 33
    Firemaking skill required: 33
    Level: 46
    Slayer XP: 25
    HP: 25
Harpie Bug Swarms are very annoying, fast hitting creatures found on Karamja. To get there, take the boat from Port Sarim to Karamja, then head west past the towns and head south as soon as you can, hugging the coast. They are on the other side of the ocean inlet across from the volcano. They require a lit bug lantern held in your off hand to be hit. In order to get the lantern, buy it from a slayer master and light it with your tinderbox (level 33 firemaking required). I found that they drop many fire runes, coins and adamant medium helmets.

    Hill Giant
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 28
    Slayer XP: 35
    HP: 35
Hill Giants can be found in the Taverly dungeon, as well as the edgeville dungeon. They are past the scorpions in Taverly, to the south. The edgeville dungeon entrance closest to the hill giants is near the cook's guild west of varrock. You'll need a brass key to use this location. You can usually buy one on the grand exchange, which is a wise investment because you can stand to make a good bit of money here with the nearby banking. These guys drop big bones and plenty of limpuwurt roots.

    Ice Warrior
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 57
    Slayer XP: 59
    HP: 59
You can fight ice warriors in the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon, which is south of Port Sarim. They are not hard to find once inside, head a little north and take the first path east to the icy cavern. Being made of ice they are weak to crushng attacks so you may want to bring a mace or axe of some sort which has a strong attack. If you don't have access to something close to your normal weapon in strength, stick with what you have. Fire spells also work very well against them. They drop all manner of items, including seeds, herbs, and runes. They can even drop dragon spears although very, very rarely.

    Kalphite Worker
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 28
    Slayer XP: 40
    HP: 41
In order to fight these, you must go south of Al Kharid and use the Shantay Pass. You must buy a ticket in order to do so (talk to Shantay). Look for the entrance to the dungeon to the southwest of the desert. Avoid the aggressive creatures along the way. When you reach the Kalphite lair, don't wander too far. This is one of the more dangerous areas in runescape. There are some pretty high level aggressive enemies deeper in, and it is a multicombat area. You shouldn't have trouble avoiding danger if you stay near the entrance.

    Lesser Demon
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 82
    Slayer XP: 79
    HP: 79
Lesser Demons can be found in the taverly (members) dungeon west of Falador. Bring plenty of food because they are rather tough foes and being tasked with killing 80+ of these baddies will take a while. To find them, enter the members' dungeon and proceed north and around the curving path, holding to the east when you reach the first split in the path. You'll pass the flying axes, and make your way to scorpions. Across the lava flow are dark dwarves, and the lessers are just north of them. Lesser demons drop many fire runes, and even rune medium helms which can be sold for around 10k gold.

    Monkey
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 3
    Hit Points: 6
    Slayer XP: 6
Monkeys can be found on Karamja Island. The island can be accessed by taking the boat owned by Captain Tobias from Port Sarim, which is south of the city of Falador. You shouldn't have to travel far to find the monkeys, and probably shouldn't - Karamja Island can be a dangerous place. Bury the bones of all the monkeys you kill, as they give a total of five prayer experience instead of the usual four.

    Moss Giant
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 42
    Slayer XP: 60
    HP: 60
Moss Giants can be found on the far western end of Varrock's sewers. There are tougher versions of these which yield more slayer xp, but for most slayer beginners varrock sewers is the place to go. They drop many valuable items, such as seeds and various extremely rare drops like key and shield halves. Like most other giants, they also drop big bones so use them to help get your prayer level up!

    Pyrefiend
    Slayer level required: 30
    Level: 43
    Slayer XP: 45
    HP: 45
Pyrefiends are found in the Fremennik slayer's dungeon. This members-only area is located east of the golden apple tree, which itself is east of Relekka. There is a shortcut near the entrance that can be used with 81 agility (which you most likely don't have) that will take you directly to them, at any rate this is a good indicator of where you need to be if you have to walk around. You may want to bring a mirror shield if the cockatrices are aggressive toward you, as they could lower your stats. A restore potion would also do the trick. The trouble with Pyrefiends is that they hit with a magical attack, so wearing full plate is a big no-no. Try to wear leather gear to increase your magic defense. Dragonhide works great. They drop fire runes, and even level 2 clue scrolls so they are nice for farming combat experience if you can get your magical defense up.

    Skeleton
    Slayer level required: 1
    Level: 22
    Slayer: 29
    Hp: 30
Skeletons aren't very difficult monsters to fight, and they drop many herbs. You can find them in the dungeon south of Taverly (aka Members' Dungeon). Look for the exclamation point on your world map. If you've completed the druidic ritual quest, stock up on those herbs! Using the crumble undead spell on these would be a good idea, but it's not a necessity if you're of a decent combat level.
