Mission 8: The Big Push

Mission Objectives:
  • Eliminate the Confederate Forces
  • Duke Must Survive

Battlecruisers! Well, one anyway. You can't build them in this mission but at least you have one for once. Duke's battlecruiser is really powerful and should help vanquish nearly any foe that threatens your base. This will be the hardest mission yet and is one of my favorites. *I guess I like the terrain?* Anyway, you start with all of your buildings flying so scout ahead to the northwest with your wraiths and duke's battlecruiser and you'll see loads of add-on buildings. Obviously, you know where to put your buildings. Everything except the barracks, which you can place where you like. Note also that there are two command centers. You can land a command center near each of the mineral patches but the one to the south has the gas nearby. I recommend 6 SCVs on each command center doing minerals and four of them doing gas at the one with the vespene geyser. You'll have to build one supply depot to get the ball rolling though as you are at the population cap at first. Have one of the SCVs you have take care of that while the other three begin gathering minerals at one of the patches.

You should be quite competent at setting up defenses by now. This is a lot like the last mission as you'll wnat to Have barracks near the entrances but also a nice spacing of missile turrets. The enemy will use ghosts and battlecruisers this time around. The ghosts have access to nuclear silos just like yours do and you'll want a nice spread of detection capabilities. If you know where a ghost is launching a nuclear strike be sure to use the scan ability (I destroyed one of the nuclear silos to build a comsat station) to detect him if he attacks in a vulnerable spot. Alternatively you could keep a science vessel around to do detecting. Now, how to begin an offensive?

Just northwest of your base you can do a scan to see that the enemy has set up quite formidable fortifications. Unfortunately they made the mistake of not having enough mobile units to defend against a siege mode tank attack. Six goliaths, four siege tanks and twelve marines will be a great force just as in the last mission. I suppose I am partial to these units. Marines to stimpack when it's desperate or to do that last bit of damage, siege tanks to protect them from afar and goliaths to dominate the air and provide extra ground firepower. Beautiful. Attack the northwest only when you're ready. Don't give your opponent time to catch its breath!

The brown base should fall fairly easily. Roll your troops to the north, cross the bridge and prepare to destroy another base. This one's easy like the last one if you followed my recommendations for units. Keep your army reinforced and use your scanner ability to scout the map. You can even use wraiths to do it quickly to find targets of opportunity. Once you've come so far you can waste a few resources here and there. Once you're across the first bridge go east and cross another. You'll find units here and there which aren't in great numbers but can still be annoying. Destroy them and make your way northeast toward the base proper. Get your siege tanks in siege mode on the upper elevation and they'll be able to strike into the heart of the enemy base without fear of swift retaliation. Keep a number of units near them at all times to handle any threats they may encounter. This shouldn't be hard but when you're done you may not get a Victory if the enemy has set up a small base in the northwestern corner. Send some units there to destroy it. Duke can even handle that while your units are attacking the last base.
