Mission 1: Among the Ruins

Mission Objectives:
  • Create a Spawning Pool
  • Create a Hydralisk Den
  • Protect the Chrysalis

Group your zerglings to defend against any attacking terrans.First, group all your zerglings together and set them near the north of your base, should you be attacked. You probably won't, but it's good to practice being safe early rather than make costly mistakes later. Spawn a drone and two overlords at your hatchery. The drone will aid your others in collecting minerals. When you've got about eight drones harvesting minerals you can build an extractor, then set four new drones to gathering gas.

Make your overlords move out of the way of your base. Put them in the far corner to keep them safe. They do have their uses, but you won't be needing them for anything other than supplies in this mission. When your economy's running smoothly (you've got those drones working) morph three new drones into a spawning pool, evolution chamber and hydralisk den - in that order. Get the metabolic boost upgrade for your zerglings at the spawning pool, and research the missile attacks upgrade at the evolution chamber for your hydralisks. You'll want both upgrades for your hydralisks at their den, when it's available. Finally, upgrade the existing creep colony in your base into a sunken colony. Build another creep colony (morphed to a sunken colony) near your extractor to guard the eastern side of your base. This will help stave off any Terran ground troops which attempt to destroy the Chrysalis.

Now you can build your force which should be sufficient to take down the Terrans on this map. Unfortunately, you'll need more overlords to support them. Spawn about two more of them - that should suffice. When you get around to it, your attack force should consist of at least 12 zerglings and eight hydralisks. Remember, you'll want to leave the zerglings you started with at home to guard the Chrysalis!

While all your new forces are being built, you will probably be able to choose another upgrade at the evolution chamber. I recommend you pick the carapace this time, since it affects all your ground forces and will improve their durability in combat. When you've got all your hydralisks and zerglings hatched, and have set them into their own attack groups, you can push your forces north to start destroying the Terrans.

After you finish the terrans here you can head up the ramp to reach the terran base. When you reach the area in the screenshot you'll meet a small group of Terrans. Keep your forces together as you approach and your losses should be minimal. Go up the ramp here, after the terrans are dead, and head east. You'll come to more Terrans, possibly protected by some goliaths and wraiths. Focus your fire on the goliaths as they do the most damage, then you can kill of the wraiths with your hydralisks. Pause here, and set the rally point of your hatchery to this location. Start pumping out forces to keep your group replenished. Even if your group falls there will be a constant stream of fresh troops to kill off your enemies. After you've set the rally point and started some hydralisks to meet up with your forces, destroy the Terran starport to the east. You'll encounter more resistance but it shouldn't be anything your forces can't handle. When your forces are back to full strength, go down the ramp by the starport.

Here you'll find the main Terran base. Let your zerglings run amok, destroying buildings (set them to attack-move and they'll go about their business) while you control your hydralisks and focus-fire on anything that threatens you. This isn't very hard at all, and is a good strategy for finishing off bases on any map. When nothing is attacking, focus your hydralisks' fire on the barracks, then help the zerglings finish off the rest of the base when your dominance is complete. Head directly south of this base and you'll find yoru final target: a small terran outpost. This is just a barracks and a couple missile turrets, you have nothing to worry about. Destroy it and your victory is sealed.
