Chapter Five: March of the Scourge

Mission Objectives:
  • Survive for 30 Minutes

Jaina's stuff is dropped to the ground. Pick it up or you'll lose it. Arthas is really important in this mission anyway so beef him up. Take Arthas to the southeast and talk to the villager there. Three footmen will join you. It's important now to guard the main entrances to your base. Those being to the northwest, northeast and the west. They are already guarded by guard towers but you will want to fortify them with footmen, riflemen and priests. Try to keep them balanced and send reinforcements as needed. Keep a steady flow of resources and hold onto your defenses. Build a blacksmith and upgrade your footmen some to improve their odds in combat. The priests will help them a lot. Some of the undead attack forces are pretty large and can be harder than most of the stuff you've faced. At first, keep Arthas going back and forth as the undead attack. Have him go where he is needed. Don't leave an area undefended though - in other words don't divert too many of your other forces to guard one entrance. They could attack from two sides. You will be informed, before too much time has passed of a grain caravan heading for the last town. This is the optional quest for this chapter.

Optional Quest: Destroy the Grain Caravan
Defeating this caravan is easy. In the extreme northeast corner of the map is the town you must prevent the caravan from reaching. There is a path that snakes around the top of the map avoiding any of the undead bases. Follow that path and you'll reach the caravan. There's not a lot to fear from it but Arthas alone could get killed (I did manage to finish it with him alone but it was dangerous as hell) so you may want to take at least a small escort of footmen. When you destroy the caravan you'll be rewarded with a scroll of town portal! Oh.. and a medallion of courage which gives +4 strength and intelligence to any hero who wears it - good item!

It's a long time until Uther comes at this point and there are a lot of Undead coming for you in waves. There is very little advice I can give you except to try and grow your swelling forces even further. You'll face upkeep problems but if you are then your forces are alive and defending the town, eh? Maybe once you reach a certain point you should stop making units so your upkeep will fall back to normal levels as your forces die. Replenish between waves and keep Arthas where he's needed. Sorceresses are great for support as well as some Mortar teams which can cause some good splash damage to weaken approaching enemies. Really, just don't try to be heroic and take out the Undead bases to the west and northwest and you should be ok.

You may notice that the northeast gate is not being attacked at all. I had this going on and stopped defending it. I think if the grain caravan reaches that city it might turn into a third town which will attack you from that direction - as the others attack from their respective directions. At 0:00 Uther arrives and can really save your ass. I had undead pouring into my base and made Arthas run for his life. I think he was one hit away from death when the cutscene saved him.
