Quest Start: Upon discovering the area known as Oasis.
  • Destroy Harold's Heart
    or
  • Accelerate Harold's Growth
    or
  • Stop Harold's Growth

You can learn that Oasis exists from several locations in the game, none of which appear to be vital to the completion of the quest. They'll simply reveal the location to you on your minimap. This isn't really necessary, as it's easy to find -- 9 squares east from the northwestern corner of the map. It can only be approached from west to east, so keep that in mind when you're choosing where to speed walk from. To find the actual area, you'll need to look for a small path on the western side of the mountains. Oasis itself is situated in the southwestern corner of the ninth square. It shouldn't be too hard to locate, and this quest has a nice reward.

When you finally approach, you'll be informed that you should come inside as someone referred to as "He" has been expecting you. Upon entering, you may remember Three Dog of Galaxy News Radio talking about a place with lots of trees. This would be it! Nope, Three Dog wasn't just high on Jet, it really exists. At any rate, talk to Tree Father Birch once inside and he'll tell you that to meet "him" you must pass a ritual of purification. If you pass a speech check, Birch will tell you a bit more about who He is, but that's not necessary. Drink from the basin as instructed, it's the little tree trunk with roots growing out of it in the center. You can't drink from it just yet, as Birch says, the Tree Minders have to assemble first. Wait on them, then have a drink. They'll recite an odd ritual and you'll pass out, waking up in a grove.

Dead ahead is the tree they've been worshipping. Turns out, it's Harold from the previous Fallout games! He says he's been rooted there for decades since Bob finally grew so large as to become a tree. He calls Bob Herbert now, just for his own amusement. He'll ask you to kill him, by going underground and destroying his heart. The alternative is to burn him down with a flamethrower, but the citizens here will all become hostile if you do it that way. Also, you can get a perk and a special item by doing this quest the right way. Before you head on to attempt the quest, return to the main Oasis area through the gate and find Sapling Yew. Save your game, then talk to her. Ask her about her god and try to pass the speech check to learn that is is afraid of fire. If you successfully do this, you'll be awarded with a bear that gives you +10 speech skill after the quest (a permenant increase). You do have multiple options to complete this quest, involving putting sap on the roots or even accelerating Bob's growth. Different people around the town will give you rewards if you do it "their way", but I prefer to do it as Harold asked, as you will get the Barkskin perk as a reward instead of a weak helmet or robes.

At any rate, find Branchtender Cypress to get the key to the underground, but you will likely be interrupted by the inhabitants arguing. Talk to them and take your pick, ignore their requests if you like and just kill the heart. Get the key from Cypress and enter the caverns. There are many mirelurks here, so it can be dangerous. Grenades, flamers and lucky shots to the face will see you through. When you reach the first big pool, you'll need to go underwater some. Head to the southern wall of the pool after killing the mirelurks. Look on the minimap and you can see the location where you'll need to go. Swim under the archway (use your pip-boy light!) and continue along the path. From here it's pretty linear. When you reach the sunken chamber door, you're in the right place. Continue to the end to find Harold's Heart, which is very very enlarged. Here you'll make your choice on how to progress (as you might guess, I destroyed the heart to get the Barkskin perk). With that done, begin the trek back out of the tunnels or explore it to find some good items (skill books).

Head back to Tree Father Birch, where the corpse of Harold now stands. He won't be mad at you, surprisingly. Talking to him finishes the quest, but if you took my advice and passed the speech check on Sapling Yew, you'll get the bear from here which will raise your speech skill permenantly by 10 points.
