Skyrim - Warriors

Combat Skills and Playing a Warrior

There are six Combat skills in Skyrim. Many characters will want to delve into Smithing, so that they can create and improve weapons and armor. You can choose several routes to deal your damage, or invest in all of them to make use of every good weapon you find. Given the limited number of perk choices, specialization is much better. This guide to playing a Warrior will link you to strategy guides for each skill, so that you can get the most out of your Perk selections, find trainers, and level your fighter. You can increase your experience gains in Combat Skills 20% by using The Warrior stone, one of three Guardian Stones near Riverwood in the beginning of the game.

Archery
Archery lets your Dragonborn fight from afar with Bow and Arrow. This is a staple skill in the early game, when your character probably doesn't have the Magicka or shouts necessary to bring down a dragon. It's also very handy for letting you deal damage to enemies before they close to melee range.

Block
Block governs your use of a Shield, which can be combined with a one-handed weapon. Shields raise your armor value, but can also be used to block which reduces damage from enemies. A variety of perks expand the effect of blocking from stopping arrow damage to halving the damage of magical attacks while your shield is raised.

Heavy Armor
Heavy Armor reduces damage taken when wearing armor of the same class. Perks here reduce the weight, raise armor rating, and allow your Dragonborn more mobility in combat. Heavy Armor can easily hit the armor cap with perks and very little smithing, especially when wearing Ebony, Dragonbone and Daedric armors.

One-Handed Weapons
One-Handed increases the damage you deal while wielding one-handed weapons either alone, with a shield, or dual wielding. You can choose to specialize in War Axes, Swords, or Maces.

Smithing
Smithing lets you create weapons and armor from a variety of materials. You can also upgrade them to increase the armor rating/damage of your gear. This is a great skill for boosting your characters' stats, though not nearly as potent as Enchanting.

Two-Handed Weapons
Two-handed weapons are the single-most damaging type in Skyrim. With powerful attacks it's easy to knock foes off their feet. These huge weapons can even be used to block attacks, although not as well as a shield. You can specialize in Greatswords, Warhammers, or Battleaxes.
