Terraria Tutorial:

How to Get Wings to Fly

Learn all about crafting your first wings in Terraria. Entry level wings don't look quite so cool, but will let your character fly about the world of Terraria. Better wings give better flight times.

Getting a pair of decent wings should be high on the priority list of players entering Hard Mode. This guide will introduce you to your first options to get your character wings and start flying, which is important for maneuverability during Terraria's boss fights while also letting you better navigate and explore the world. Let's look at your wing options early in Hard Mode, after you've farmed some Mythril or Orichalcum gear (at least an Anvil). Though none of these are 'cool' like end-game wings, they'll get you around with their limited flight time. The more impressive and powerful wings must wait until later - these are the ones available to anyone who has just recently started in Hard Mode. We'll also look at how to get Soul of Flight and other materials so that you can craft them.

Wings are equipped in an Accessory slot and may be Reforged at the Goblin Tinkerer in order to provide additional stat boosts, such as crit chance and defense.

List of Early-Hardmode Wings

While the Steampunker will sell you a jetpack for 40 gold during certain moon phases, her arrival in town requires you to kill at least one Mechanical Boss. That feat is much easier to accomplish with some wings to let you fly to both pursue the bosses and dodge their attacks. Here are the wings available as soon as you enter Hardmode, requiring you only farm some materials. Look further down for information on how to get the various materials. Note that all Wings require at least a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil to be Crafted.

* About Flight Time & Accessories
Base flight time is 1.67 seconds, meaning that is the total time you can hold the jump button down. You have that much 'gas' whether you flap continually or only in bursts. Only landing or grabbing a rope will reset this. In the game code, this is represented as '100' flight time. Therefore, a wing with 130 can fly 30% longer or 2.17 seconds. Rocket boots or any accessory derived from them will increase the flight time 30%, so you could fly 2.17 seconds with Fairy Wings combined with this accessory. Items like frog legs and the balloons increase the speed of ascent, allowing you to make effective use of your flight time when going vertically. However, unless you're just out exploring, that's sometimes a waste of an accessory slot.

My Recommendation
Since it only takes Souls of Flight and Pixie Dust, I would go with the Fairy Wings. They are not great, but you're not relying on killing hundreds of monsters and will pick up some gold and other drops as you farm them in the Hallow area of your world. Note how awesome the Frozen Wings are, but see also how to get the Frozen Feather. You can then save your money for expensive hardmode reforging, as opposed to paying the Witch Doctor. If you skip these wings, there's not much reason to put the Witch Doctor into a Jungle home, aside from the Tiki Totem (2 Platinum) which will let you summon a little tiki spirit pet.

Farming Materials to Craft Wings

How to get Soul of Flight: Take a stack of 500 or more blocks and build upward until Harpies start attacking you, then go even further. Remember that you can destroy the blocks you place to build a giant pillar in order to recover them. You may even find a Floating Island. Just jump and drop one block under you each time. You'll eventually start getting attacked by them.

A slightly more rare creature, the Wyvern, will attack you. They hit very hard and act like a flying worm. Jump over them and dodge their attacks, while using attacks of your own that can hit multiple segments of their body at once. Having decent armor is important, because they can absolutely kill you if you do this too early in Hard Mode. It will only take a few kills to get the Soul of Flight necessary to build a pair of wings or two.

How to get Feather: These are dropped by Harpies, which exist at high altitudes and on floating islands.

How to get Soul of Light: Kill creatures in the Underground Hallow in order to get this drop. You must be at least near the Cavern layer, so fairly eep. It will take a lot of kills to get enough souls for a wing. I don't recommend it, given how easy Pixie Dust is to acquire and the Angel Wings' low flight time.

How to get Soul of Night: Kill creatures in the Underground Crimson/Corruption in order to get this drop. You must be at least near the Cavern layer, so fairly deep. It will take a lot of kills to get enough souls for a wing. I don't recommend it, given how easy Pixie Dust is to acquire and the Demon Wings' low flight time.

How to get Pixie Dust: Kill Pixies in the Hallowed area of your world. You can do this on the surface, and they drop 1-3 each kill along with a few silver. You can also farm Unicorn Horns at the same time and earn some decent money doing this, while also nabbing a couple of important accessories.

How to get Butterfly Dust (Rare): Dropped by Moths in the Underground Jungle. These creatures themselves can be somewhat rare, so it's not a recommended route to getting wings early on. Still, mapping the Underground Jungle early on can have its benefits.

How to get Tattered Bee Wing (Rare): Dropped very rarely by Moss Hornets in the Underground Jungle. That's the only purpose of this item.

How to get Giant Harpy Feather (Rare): Dropped very rarely from Harpies (see above). It's not worth the effort, but nice to have if you get lucky.

How to get Ice Feather (Rare): This one is problematic, though technically doable early in Hard Mode. You must go to the Snow Biome whenever it's raining so that there will be a blizzard there. They're more likely to appear at night. Having a weather radio and means of recalling to town makes this easier, since you can just go when the rain starts. The Ice Feather is dropped by the Ice Golem fairly commonly, but they will only spawn during blizzards and have 4,000 life. You may see only a few of them during the entire time it snows. The Frozen Wings are great given their stats, but you're probably better off starting with Fairy Wings then upgrading to these a little later in your game.

Witch Doctor: Leaf Wings: Housing the Witch Doctor in the Jungle, or an artificially produced Jungle (Mud/Jungle grass seeds required) will allow you to purchase Leaf Wings from him for 1 Platinum at night (Hard Mode only!). They're as good as anything else on the list, although Frozen Wings will give you slightly better horizontal movement. Depending how much money your character has, this may be preferable to farming the materials necessary. Slashing jungle grass will occasionally yield seeds. You need 80 mud blocks to create an artificial jungle biome, then build a normal house once the grass has spread.

Future Plans for the Guide

My Guide was started on Sept 23, 2015 and now includes dozens of pages about the game. I hope I can help newcomers to get a bit more enjoyment ouf of Terraria by demystifying some of how it works. You can provide feedback to me at [email protected]. I am tied up with multiple projects - this, The Sims 4, and Fallout 4 but do plan to return to Terraria and finish the boss guides and some other pages.
