Quest Start: After finding the entrance to Vault 87.
Be careful not to bring any companions into Vault 87. They can be lost at the end of the quest, resulting in not only the loss of the party member but also what they were carrying. Either have 50 science, or bring a lot of radaway, rad-x and a radiation suit (if you lack one there is one near the G.E.C.K.). You need to get to the end of Vault 87. Ideally, you will release a friendly super-mutant, fawkes from his cell. Alternatively, you can prep to go into a severely radiated area to get the GECK yourself.
Which ever path you choose, you will want to explore as much of this area as possible. The loot here is awesome. There are several ammo crates, locked and unlocked, as well as a few terminals that you can hack. Remember that if you can both hack a terminal and unlock a door or safe, you can lockpick the target then unlock it with the terminal and get both xp boosts. Work your way to the Test lab. There are many super mutants in your way, and they could be mostly comprised of Masters. Big Guns fans will love this place because you can find a huge stash of missiles inside, and the corridors aren't bad for shooting rockets if you position yourself right. Super Mutant Masters can really consume some ammo, so you will need extra ammo as well as stimpacks to negate all the damage they do. This is especially true if you're wearing poor armor or Power Armor that is relatively unrepaired.
To release Fawkes from his prison in the Vault, you can either hack the terminal outside his cell (Science 75) or proceed toward the GECK and release him through the medical wing maintenance terminal (50 science). Basically, you are going to need some degree of science skill to release Fawkes, or you can get it yourself. Fawkes is in cell #5 if you need to release him with the maintenance computer. Otherwise, the G.E.C.K. is in the western side of the area in the lab itself. Wear your rad suit, use rad-x and prepare to use several radaways while you're in, or follow Fawkes and wait for him to return with the G.E.C.K.
Once Fawkes returns with the G.E.C.K. or you come out of radiation hell with the device, head toward the exit for a surprise. This ends the Finding the Garden of Eden Main Quest.
