Quest Start: after exiting Vault 101:

  • Find Dad
To find Dad, you'll need to first make your way to Megaton. Inside, find Moriarty's Saloon. Speak to the proprietor and, for 100 caps, he'll tell you the location of Dad, who was heading for the Galaxy News Radio Building.

How to get to Galaxy News Radio from Megaton

This is required for the main quest, and accessing this area is also useful to people who just want to play and level up as the D.C. ruins have many supermutants that drop good items and give excellent experience. Begin your journey to GNR Plaza by heading east of the Super Duper Mart. You can cross the bridge to the north of the supermarket, then travel south once you're on that side of the river. Find Farragut West Metro Station and go through it. There is some good ammo to be found here if you feel like searching. Most notable is a computer that is near a locked chain fence. If you hack this terminal, you can unlock a safe. Using the gas main flow test option creates a cloud of gas on the other side of the chain link fence that you can use a laser weapon or other incendiary type weapon to ignite, which will kill the ghouls that are waiting on the other side. Proceed through that gate with the key that is found in the safe (you can also lockpick this and kill all the ghouls if you want). This will lead you to Tenleytown/Friendship Metro Station.

Hang a left once you enter this area, and you'll see a turn you can make to the right with a Nuka Cola machine and graffiti saying 'GNR Outpost'. That is the direction you need, and seeing this will let you know you're on the right path. Head to the subway tunnel and turn to the right toward the southbound line. When you reach the large terminal area climb the escalator and proceed to the east. There is a short tunnel here that leads to a gate that goes to Chevy Chase.

    Galaxy News Radio

Once you are at Chevy Chase, you're set. Head a little way south to find some Brotherhood of Steel Paladins fighting Supermutants. Help them out, and after the battle their leader will offer for you to tag along. Seems GNR has had some serious supermutant problems lately. Follow on their heels, and push for the GNR buiding as it gets closer. Try to steal as many last hits from the brotherhood as you can, so that you can get the experience. When you reach the actual plaza, you won't be able to get in until all the super mutants are dead. Look for fallen brotherhood paladins and take their items, but be careful not to get overencumbered. A brother may die and leave behind a Fat Man for you, which is a mini nuke launcher. If you can find it before the following events, great!

A super mutant behemoth will bust through and start attacking everyone, including you. Find a safe distance (or the fat man first) so that you can fire off the mini nuke. Remember, you can kill yourself! It may take two shots to bring down the baddie. Be sure to try and get the last shot!

When the behemoth is down, you can finally enter the GNR building (use the intercom to the right of the main door). Three Dog, the Disc Jockey for Galaxy News Radio, is waiting on an upper level. It's not hard to find him. Listen to his tale and learn a bit, then hound him a bit more about the whereabouts of Dad. He says he'll tell you if you find a new dish for GNR to help boost its broadcast range. With that, this part of the Main Quest of Fallout 3 is done.
